Umbrellas did not help at all. My daughter, a friend from Ireland and our own intrepid William Hereford showed up at 11 am on the Mortensen promenade to take in the steel band and feast on some of the Caribbean’s best.

But it was a wash out. The performers did their best but Mother Nature was not to be denied. So we retreated to a dry pub for lunch – It proved to be just enough time to let the storm pass over and the rain stop – so after a hardy lunch we returned and were rewarded by great music and smells. There was a sense of delight and elegance every where you looked. I loved seeing the different islands present their individual traditional music and dance. Keeping a sense of history, tradition is an important part of preserving a sense of identity. Someone commented that because the islands had never been enslaved, the descendents had a joyous sense of life and their future.
